Cotswold Stone Cleaning Specialists.
We were recently contacted by the owners of a beautiful property located in Stow on the Wold, Gloucestershire. They had purchased this as a second home to use as a family holiday getaway and were in the process of making it their own.
After the initial site visit, it was agreed that some of the organic growth and algae on the stonework had become excessive. In addition, there was also a large amount of white lichen that had colonised on the upper areas of the stone.
Why Clean Historic Stone?
It can be a balancing game when it comes to cleaning any stonework on historic or listed buildings. Cotswold stone is a prime example. It’s soft by nature and an ideal substrate for organic growth to adhere to.
Only very delicate techniques and methods should be used, therefore preventing the chance of further corrosion or abrasive damage to the stone.
It is very important to find the correct balance between cleaning the stone enough that excessive organic growth is removed. If left it could end up damaging the stone by trapping moisture within it. For instance, this prevents it from breathing naturally as well as drying. Above all, it is also important not over clean the surface. Therefore leaving some of the natural, aged patina to the stonework and not trying to make it look like it is new.
The stonework surrounds on the ground floor windows had a large amount of algae growth. Mainly due to a blocked gutter. Therefore, had caused it to overflow and run down the face of the building.
We cleaned off the stonework using our HydroThermal system. It provides a consistent flow of 150°c superheated water at below 80bar of pressure in this scenario.
The blocked guttering was, of course, cleared as well, therefore, preventing a repeat scenario.
Careful Cleaning Methods
A large amount of biofilm, as well as organic growth, can be seen next to the cleaned section of the stone.
It is also worth noting how the HydroThermal system used has not caused any damage to the face of the stonework or the fragile pointing material.
If you have a listed or historic property that requires cleaning, we have a solution that can help make it look its best again.
